When we moved to Hemphill we found out that you had to buy two things to live- things that in most places in the US are mostly free... water and television. Hemphill is so rural that with regular "rabbit ears" you cannot get local channels, probably because there are none. We've researched our tap water and our local newspaper has printed information regarding the quality of our water- the city has even mailed us the water report. Our water contains trihalomethanes. After drinking the water for an extended amount of time you could get cancer. So everyone here buys drinking water/filters/etc. We do bathe in it and use it to brush our teeth, but we DO NOT drink it. Our grocery store always has bottled water on sale and there is a water cooler company here.
TV. We have lived here for almost two years now, without tv, probably something many of you take for granted, huh? We found that the internet had many tv shows available to watch, commercial free, the day after it aired. Also the weather channel website gave us our local weather. So we've used these resources. We've watched Survivor mostly. (We do have DSL here, go figure.) After last week's Conference we decided it would be worth the money to have BYUTV at our own house. Through our local phone company, we got DISH last Friday!!! We are so excited! We've never in our married life paid for tv before! Olivia and Ella don't even know what tv is! They call it "watching a movie" because that's what it's been for 2 years.
Well, gotta go, Jon and Kate plus 8 should be coming on soon! LOLOLOL
this TV post has to be the cutest thing i have ever read in all my life! good for you jill!
ReplyDeleteI understand rural living - Buna wasn't much better. And, let me say, I LOVE Jon and Kate plus 8. Gabi even loves it.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! There are so many shows on TLC and the Discover Channel that you will be addicted! The kids will love Animal Planet, too! So many good shows on those channels that the kids can watch without you having to hold your finger over the mute button. Meerkat Manor is a personal favorite of mine and, of course, Shark Week on Discovery. Enjoy!
ReplyDeleteYippeee!!! Congratulations Jill! We are lucky enough to have free tv, but we only get 3 channels, so I too aspire to one day pay for tv. I would mostly just watch the Food Network. Go figure.
