Creating delight

I love hardback books, especially when they have pretty jackets. I love how they look in my bookcase and how they feel in my hands. I love the crisp pages and being able to see how much I have read and how much is left. However, I'm not so great at reading them...yet.

This book has been sitting on my nightstand since we moved in, as a decoration more or less ~ because I hadn't made time to read it. My mom bought it for me from Deseret Book, for Mother's Day I think. Late last night I decided it was time to at least read some of it. I'm so glad I did! {Thanks Mama for the beautiful book!}

I've found a favorite quote already! It's by the co-author, Shawni Eyre Pothier:

"Sometimes success is when we don't get through the to-do list but instead stop long enough to notice the little things. To savor moments. Not only to notice the delight in our children's eyes, but to create that delight."

Doesn't that just hit you? I mean, I am so grateful to be a mother and to be able to stay at home with them and spend time with them everyday. But I admit, I don't have this perspective often enough. I am a task-oriented person, so I struggle with making time to play with my kids. This time of their lives, when they're so small and need so much, will be gone in a blink.

My new goal is to not just glance and listen, but look into their eyes and hear them. At the risk of sounding cliche- I don't want to miss any smiles. Since we are home-schooling this year, I'll have every opportunity to watch them grow and learn and see the little light bulbs above their heads turn on- see their eyes light up and know that these moments aren't passing unnoticed. I want to create delight.

    Man, I keep thinking about That quote!
    Jake's So much better at getting down on the floor and playing with our kids. He teaches me how to play.
    Book jackets stress me out, I'm so afraid of them getting torn :-)
    Thanks for the great quote!

  2. That is a great book! You will LOVE home-schooling and it will love you. Thanks for reminding me of the thought provoking quote. I don't know why it's also hard for me to stop and play too! I'm off to vacuum again . . . but I'll be planning to play afterwards. Love you!
